Randomness with Lights?
Alex from aenhancers (awesome site by the way) asked an interesting question regarding the More Randomness post. He was interested to see if the same principle could be applied to lights.
So I decided to do a quick test. The answer is to use the MoGraph Color Shader in the Transparency Channel and add this to your lights. Then use the Random Effector on your Cloner Object.

Thanks Tim, that is awesome!
Could you explain the random effector settings in the effector tab? Why did you set the Min/Max numbers to 120/-70?
Thanks!
Alex
Hi Alex
They control the effector min and max random values. So if you have a rotation randomness of 90° and random effector at max 100%, then the max random rotation will be 90°
With colour it is a bit more tricky to know how the RGB values are changing, but I just played around with those until the random colours looked appropriate. You can also overshoot the values above 100% or below -100% to increase or decrease the randomness.

Hi Tim,
Not sure where to ask you this question, but I just wanted to know how you created the hatch drawing effect on your f1 sketch and toon animation? I’m trying to do something similar but I’m pulling my hair out and have only managed to use the hatch material and animated its offset to try and fake the effect of hand drawing.

Hi
That effect is actually created by using sketch lines. The type of line you need to use is contour.
Hopefully that will get you in the right direction.

Hey Tim
I was wondering if you would consider a tutorial on Mograph shaders…I find the approaches used with these shaders to be extremely confusing and poorly described in the documentation. Embedding shaders within shaders in particular, as in the example on this page, makes little sense to me and seems to be part of a logic that is unique to C4d…
Thanks again for spreading your knowledge, it is an invaluable gift
Best

Making It Look Great 7 will cover the use of the MoGraph shaders
It’s pretty amazing when one is just browsing around, looking at great C4D tutorials and !!BAM!!, you find exactly what you need on a project your working on at exactly the same time. It’s a wonderful thing. Thanks Tim!
