Stairs Alternating Colour

Posted in Cinema4D MoGraph on March 28th, 2009 by Tim

I was asked a question on www.fxphd.com how to alternate between two colours on a set of stairs that someone had built.

I came up with three simple solutions that use the shader effector, the color shader and the multi shader.

I thought I’d share the file here.

MoGraph Xpresso Data Node

Posted in Cinema4D MoGraph on March 25th, 2009 by Tim

This example scene shows you how you can use the MoGraph Data Node to access specific Clones.

In this example I use the data node to attach a null to a clone and then cycle through them.

I’m sure you can find some more interesting uses for this handy node.

Cinema4D 11.026 update released

Posted in News on March 17th, 2009 by Tim

As posted by Srek on CGTalk….

Hi all,
today MAXON made the latest update 11.026 available via the online updater and the website.
If you download the update from the website make sure it get’s stored without a .zip extension.
Especially on OS X it can happen that the browser incorrectly adds this. The manual update will not work with this wrongly named file and the user can’t unpack it anyway.

As for the update itself, it contains numerous bugfixes and it is heavily recommended to install it.

A big thanks goes to all users who sent their crashreports to MAXON. 11.026 includes several fixes that we were only able to implement due to many users reporting different variations of the problems.

Cheers
Björn

You can choose Help > Check For Updates to open the online updater.  The update should appear automatically.

Creating Selection Sets Automagically

Posted in Cinema4D Misc on March 9th, 2009 by Tim

I’m sure that a lot of you are already aware that you can drag a material straight from the Material Manager onto an object and that material will be assigned to that object. Did you know, you can use a similar technique to actually restrict to Selection Sets.

In Polygon Mode, first create the polygon selection.

Create a polygon selection

Create a polygon selection

Next either drag the material from the Material Manager onto the selected polygons, or select the material and choose Apply from the Function menu.

Drag the material onto the polygon selection or choose Apply from the Function menu

Drag the material onto the polygon selection or choose Apply from the Function menu

Cinema4d will automatically create a Polygon Selection Tag and restrict the material to that selection.

Selection Set and Tag created automatically

Selection Set and Tag created automatically

Much quicker than creating the selection, choosing Set Selection, dragging your material onto the object, then dragging the tag into the texture tag . . .   Now, all you need to do, is rename the selection set tag to something more meaningful. (That’s if you want to?)

Art : toolbike

Just a bit of fun. It’s been rendered out at 90cmx90cm.

More Randomness

Posted in Cinema4D MoGraph, Illustration on March 3rd, 2009 by Tim

In the previous ramble about random colour, Leah asked

I’ve been wondering, is there any way to use effectors to apply a random color from a subset of colors (such as a range or gradient)?

So here is one method of achieving that.  I’ve used the multishader to create a subset of colours.

Multishader

Then the random effector to randomise those colours.

Not sure if it is possible from a gradient, but if anyone has an idea for that then please post a comment.

Well Rick Barrett from Maxon came up with the solution here.

For a gradient, just put the MoGraph Color Shader in a Colorizer shader.

Nice and simple too. Thanks Rick.
